Named after local mangrove plant, Manila was home to Muslim Malays before the Spanish conquistadors made it the capital of their claimed territory in the 16th century. Within the old district are several famous plazas and landmarks including Fort Santiago, Baluarte de San Diego and the Plaza de Roma. Historic churches and several museums, such as Casa Manila, Rizal Shrine, San Agustin Church and the Manila Cathedral are situated within the Intramuros district. Not far from Intramuros is the bohemian-chic community of Malate and Ermita which is home to alternative restaurants, indie bars, pubs and art galleries. Chinatown, Binondo and the San Nicolas area offer an alternative shopping experience which includes a flea market.
