Getting to your Port Elliot Accommodation

This seaside town is located just 80km south of Adelaide, so it's easy to reach your holiday rental. If driving from Adelaide, take Main South Road (Highway A13) which runs through the southern suburbs, and then turn onto Victor Harbor Road. Just before Victor Harbor, follow the signs to take the turnoff to Port Elliot.

If coming by air you'll arrive into Adelaide Airport, just west of the CBD. There's many options here for hiring a car, with a number of agencies on-site. From the airport, follow Sir Donald Bradman Drive to Main South Road, and then follow the directions stated above. Peak hour in Adelaide usually runs from around 7.30am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm, but outside of these times there's relatively little traffic and you can expect a smooth run to your accommodation.

Port Elliot: A town steeped in history

From museums to walking trails, there numerous opportunities to delve a bit deeper into the stories that have led Port Elliot to where it is today. Learn its history in museums or on fascinating walks.

The Port Elliot Heritage Trail is great fun for the whole family. Meander around some of the town’s historic buildings including the Railway Ticket Office and the Council Chambers and read the boards along the way.

Or take a trip to the Southern Fleurieu Historical Museum, run by friendly volunteers. With exhibits inside and outside, it helps you learn about dairy farming of the past and the household artefacts our ancestors used. The entry price is very reasonable and kids even go free.

The Port Elliot Maritime Heritage Trail is slightly different to the Heritage Trail as it focuses on the area’s maritime history. But it's equally worth following. As well as featuring some helpful signs which tell you more about the history, this gentle walk also takes you along a beautiful stretch of coast.

Port Elliot has a beautiful sandy shoreline where you can spend the day - dog-friendly Boomer Beach lies between the port and nearby historical town of Victor Bay and is named for the sound of the waves breaking against the dunes.

It’s only natural that there would be a wealth of water activities in Port Elliot. One place to visit is Surf and Sun Middleton, located a mere 4 kilometres away. Try windsurfing, kitesurfing and traditional surfing all under the guidance of professionals.

South Australia Whale Centre is an interactive learning experience where children and adults alike can discover more about the history of whaling. Amongst its exhibits are whale and dolphin skeletons, plenty of shells and even some miniature boats.

Explore Port Elliot's spectacular scenery

Surrounded by ocean, rivers and some beautiful scenery, you’ll want to get outdoors and make the most of your stay. Luckily, Port Elliot gives you plenty of chances to get up close and personal with nature, as well as wildlife. Pack some sturdy shoes and get exploring.

Coorong National Park is a 15.5 kilometre drive away and offers a breathtaking landscape of dunes, ocean views, saltpans and lagoons. Stretching over 150 kilometres, it is an established sanctuary for shorebirds - so make sure you bring your binoculars.

Not only are there stunning views from Onkaparinga River National Park, but it also hosts Australia’s second largest river, and with it canoeing, fishing and swimming opportunities. Alongside the river, the park has gorges, rock pools and places for rock climbing.

Granite Island is named after the boulders that litter its surface. Located a walkable 9.1 kilometres along the coast, it is accessed via a wooden causeway over the sea which makes for a memorable entrance. Other things to look out for on the island include penguins and modern art exhibits.
