Getting to Malta

Start your exploring in Valletta, Malta’s capital city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has many buildings that date back to the 16th century and many great attractions. St. John's Cathedral was built between 1572 and 1577 and boasts a stunning interior, and also has two famous works of art by the Italian artist Caravaggio.

Elsewhere in Valletta is the stunning Grand Master's Palace. Take a tour of the beautiful state rooms and take a look at the armoury, featuring pieces worn by the knights, the former residents of the palace. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are also highlights; they’re located on the highest point of the city and offer great views and a lovely place to take a stroll.

Thirty minutes from Valletta is Mdina, a well-preserved city that has some 3,000 years of history under its belt. Visit St. Paul’s Cathedral and stop by the Cathedral Museum. The real reason to visit Mdina is to stroll around the city. The medieval, winding streets are a step back in time. Make sure you check out the great views from the city walls, which are among the best in Malta.

Malta’s annual events

Malta is big on its festivals, and there’s likely to be something on during your stay at your Malta holiday rental. There are big, local festivals such as the ones that celebrate the arts, and other smaller affairs dotted around the islands.

Local favourites are Santa Marija and Mnarja, both of which occur in the summer, as well as the fiestas held by villages across the islands. These are big celebrations and are great to witness if you’re visiting your Malta holiday home when they’re on.

Other festivals include the Malta Jazz Festival, which brings international and domestic artists to the Valletta each July for three nights of great music and greater fun. In autumn, Malta celebrates Festival Mediterranea on the island of Gozo, during which music performances, art exhibitions, and plenty more take place.

Held in Valletta is the Malta Arts Festival, which takes place between July and August and is the biggest cultural event in the country. Art, music, dance, and theatre performances are all part of the occasion.
