From bratwurst to beer, the Germans have given us fantastic, familiar cuisine. However, when you spend some time in the country you'll discover a far more extensive world of hearty flavours. For either breakfast or dinner you can enjoy Brotzeit, a spread of cured meats, excellent cheeses, and wholegrain bread. For lunch or dinner, be sure to try spätzle, a free-form noodle cooked with cheese, onions, or meat, and sauerbraten, which is essentially pot roast.

Vegetarian alternatives can be found in most city restaurants. Lots of the traditional soups are made with vegetables and plenty of fruit is grown in the country, including apples, pears, and cherries. Don’t miss out on the desserts. From Black Forest cake to apple strudel, German cakes and tartes are a delight, and often enjoyed mid-afternoon as traditional Kaffee und Kuchen. Wash it all down with some quality beer, of course, or a local Riesling or Weißburgunder.

Breathtaking art, culture, and music

Berlin’s Museum Island is a collection of historic museums housing everything from the bust of Nefertiti to an incredible selection of 18th and 19th century European paintings. Venture out of the capital to discover yet more art and history. From Dresden’s Green Vault, home to royal treasures, to Munich’s incredible Alte Pinakothek, Germany's cultural institutions are bursting with masterpieces from ancient times to the modern era.

If that weren’t enough, Germany boasts some incredible concert halls. Visit the neo-Renaissance Stadthalle in Wuppertal, Cologne’s modern Kölner Philharmonie, or the new yet already iconic Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. You're bound to hear something memorable.

Regular events in Germany

Perhaps Germany’s best-known event is Munich's Oktoberfest, which actually begins in late September. This celebration of beer attracts revellers from around the world. In summer, there are numerous music festivals just outside Berlin, from the techno of Fusion to the pop and electronic sounds of Melt.

Wine drinkers will love the Weindorf, held in Stuttgart each summer. This is a great way to sample local wine, try traditional fare, and experience the true hospitality of the German people. If you like the festive season, you’ll love the country’s Christmas markets. With mulled wine, sweets, and sausage aplenty, Germany’s towns come to life in November and December. Nuremberg, Dresden, and Leipzig have some of the best-known markets, in particular.
