Local cuisine in Cambodia

Cambodian cuisine is known for its great use of freshwater fish, as the country is home to many waterways. Fish amok is a traditional Khmer dish, featuring fish steamed in banana leaves, with curry. For meat eaters, stir-fried pork curries are hearty and satisfying. In general, you can also expect great noodle dishes and for snacks, be sure to eat the local street food!

In the capital of Phnom Penh, a couple good restaurants to try out for regional flavours include Eleven One Kitchen, and a short tuk tuk ride from the centre, Mok Mony. As for local beverages, be sure to try teuk ampau, sugarcane juice, and teuk trolok, fruit smoothies you can order at juice stalls you'll find all over.

Kidding around in Cambodia

Phnom Penh Royal Palace is a great site to visit, for both children and adults, thanks to impressive gardens, topiary shaped like teapots and other objects, and musical performances featuring traditional musicians. Since visiting the Angkor temples is a must-do for anyone visiting Cambodia, one possibility is to hire a tuk tuk driver for the duration, so that little ones' energy is preserved.

Just off the coast of Cambodia is Koh Thonsáy, also known as Rabbit Island. This serene destination is home to great beaches, and is popular for families with children.

Khmer artefacts and national parks

See the once in a lifetime view of the Emerald Buddha in the Silver Pagoda of Phnom Penh. There is some debate regarding what material it was made out of and this adds to the mystique. The king of the pre-Khmer Rouge reign, Norodom Sihanouk, had the temple's interior inlaid with more than 5,000 tiles of silver. Some of these are open to public viewing. The National Museum of Cambodia is home to a range of Cambodian and Khmer historical artefacts, with over 14,000 items covering much of the country's history.

In the city of Battambang, you'll find a protected heritage quarter, as well as many cafes, art galleries, and alternative art spaces. Just outside the city, bird-lovers will love Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. For something a bit different, head to Preah Monivong National Park, where you can visit the jungle as well as French colonial ruins.
